The Department of Veterinary and Pest Control Services in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) thro ugh the GHSA initiative with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) had recently launched the Frontline In-Service Applied Veterinary Epidemiology Training (ISAVET) Programme in 2021. The programme was implemented to address locally-identified gaps in the veterinary workforce in Nigeria.

On October 8, 2021, a Steering Committee was inaugurated and held its first meeting at the REDISSE Crisis Management Centre, NAIC House, Central Business District, Abuja. Members of the steering committee were drawn for FMARD, FAO-ECTAD, National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), the academia, State Departments of Veterinary Service, Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH), Federal Ministry of Environment (FMEnv.), African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET), Nigeria, and the West African Health Organization (WAHO), Nigeria.

The objectives of the meeting were to review the progress made so far in the ISAVET programme in Nigeria, and to ratify ISAVET implementation plan and procedures.
